Brent began painting/drawing when he was about 18
months old. In 1983 Brent began an Associate Diploma of Art, Craft and Design at the School of Art
(Mt. Nelson),
he became very frustrated with this course at it did not teach him any new skills. In 1984 Brent started a Graphic Design
Certificate at TAFE Tasmania, towards the end of the year he gained employment at the Tasmanian Museum and Art
Gallery, Hobart.
At the museum Brent was responsible for producing artwork for publications, exhibitions and promotional material, he has produced
very detailed ink drawings for the bromide camera which were used for these processes and screen printing. Some of his
work can still be seen at the museum in the Convict and Geology Galleries and in many of their publications. With the
introduction of computers at the museum in the early 1990's, Brent taught himself and his boss in the use of
QuarkXpress, Photoshop, Freehand and many other software programs. While computers have taken over the graphic design
processes Brent began spending his free time producing drawings and oil paintings. Because of his previous detail
work in graphic art his drawings and oil paintings also reflect a high degree of detail. Brent describes his oil painting
style as detailed cubist/realism with a strong emphasis on colour, shape and light. He intends to free up
his style in the future to produce more flowing and representational pieces.
